August Fridays - Chilly and grey

Today was a chilly day, it felt like late September, not August. Here in Montreal, we didn't even hit 20C and for the most part it seemed overcast. *sigh*

I was extra busy at work, hence the later in the day post. As of next week my schedule gets turned topsy turvy and I'll do my usual September adjusting and probably do my worrying the week after I've figured out what I'm doing and where I need to be. I will also be back to having a bit more time to sit at my scrap table which I haven't done in ages! I'm looking forward to getting back into a more "normal" work week and less weekend work.

Last week I picked my top 3 for end of summer and almost fall. This week I want to draw your attention to one line in particular. K&Co. has always produced amazing lines of paper and embellishments, if you've never had a chance to work with them, the fall line is a great choice to start with.

Tim Coffey has created a fun fall line for K&Co. that is crisp and clean yet has a touch of country charm and whimsy.

August Fridays - Summer's almost gone

I realise that summer is almost over when kids are getting their back to school supplies and new fall wardrobes. The time seemed to have flown by and only in the last week did it actually feel like summer had visited us. This was the second summer in a row where it just didn't feel right, lots of rain and not as much sun. *sigh* I can only hope for better next year!

August Fridays - and it finally feels like summer...

I can't believe it, finally. Only today has it really felt like summer, 30C (37C with the humidex) I'd get in a pool if I had one but I don't. I can tell the heat has hit my street because it's been, for the most part, quieter. I love it!

The forecast is for another week of this and I'm thrilled. Of course with the weather hitting higher temps. I do end up being more aware of what I'm doing, making sure I'm not overdoing the manual labour around the building, drinking enough fluids and staying out of direct sunlight so I don't get heat stroke. I may deal with it better than most I know, but I do take precautions just the same, to help me deal.

The weather made me think of a line that the store has had in stock for awhile but I haven't mentioned since the beginning of summer. Imaginisce Summer Cool line has tons of fun stuff to put together some great summer LO's, and with the weather taking a turn for the warmer now's the time to pick them up before it's too late. Once these babies are gone, they are gone for good!

It's August!

Wow! time flew.

And I hadn't realised till just this minute that yes it's Friday and I haven't figured out what Fridays in August will be.

I also have been so busy working out my weekend schedule helping out a friend (by watching his daughter from yesterday till Monday) at a science fiction literary convention that I hadn't planned anything. ACK! I guess I was too excited to meet a fave author of mine! Neil Gaiman is in town and I had a chance to meet him briefly yesterday. I'll be getting stuff signed today.

For those of you that might not think you recognise the name, let me tell you, you'd be surprised. He is the mastermind behind the movie Coraline! He originally wrote it at a young adult novel years ago and this past year it finally came to be on the big screen! I love that story.

I have made up a Coraline LO but don't have a pic of it on my computer to post at this moment. Maybe I'll get a pic with Neil sometime this weekend (which would be awesome) and then I'll be putting together a LO of my adventures. I got to meet up with a friend of mine who is a wonderful author and woman and I really don't get to see her enough. I'm behind on her books and will have to ask her what I'm missing.

Fiery Fridays - Feels like Fall

I don't know about you but when I think of summer, I think of shorts and tank tops, the hot sun above and a cold glass of lemonade that's ready to drink. I think of temperatures hot enough that I want to live in the pool. I definately do not think of socks and sneakers and light sweaters so as not to feel a chill.

For some reason summer has only occasionally visited the last few months, but there have been more than enough days that feel like a beautiful fall day. I'm ok with fall, once it's mid to late September, but before that it should stay away! Speaking of fall and nice days, have you seen the new pre-orders from Basic Grey? They have an absolutely gorgeous line called Indian Summer, the weather seemed perfect for it.

I've come to love Basic Grey, everything from their papers and card kits to the wide range of embellishments. The pictures really don't do the products justice. When I saw this new line I just about squealed. The colours are gorgeous and the stickers look amazing.

The olio rub ons are a treat to work with, the colours are always vibrant and they really last. They are excellent quality to work with. Fiery Fridays - Bringing home baby

I'm back after my weekend away last week. It's nice to get away every once in awhile and connect with friends that I usually only see about once a year. I had a wonderful time being the geek that I am at Polaris 23 and as always look forward to the next year. I will of course be putting together a LO or two about my weekend crazyness, including Klingon Karaoke (see photo at left, courtesy of Natasha at the con), meeting fun actors and helping out with the Constellation Awards!

This coming weekend is another busy one but with a special event on Sunday. A friend of mine is having her first child, she's due at the end of August and her baby shower is this weekend. Now, we may live in the same city and we keep in touch through MSN and facebook but we don't see each other as often as we'd like. I was one of the handful of people she wanted at the event and it made me so happy to hear it. She is a wonderful, beautiful woman and deserves all the best in her life. So for the event, I offered the woman hosting to help out a bit and in turn have come up with so many ideas for things I can do for my friend.

First, I decided to make a diaper cake! Not only is this a fun gift, but it's a great centerpiece for the gift table. I know it's not paper craft related, but it was the first of many creative ideas I got for the shower. It's three tiered and everything in it is completely usable. There is a total of 66 diapers, 5 onesies and various other goodies tucked away in it. For anyone interested in how to make one, just send me a message and I will happily send you instructions! It's super simple and looks great.

My next project will be a baby book with pre-made pages for mom and dad to fill in. I've never made one before and I'm not sure how well it will work out, but I will take pictures as I go along. What would be great for a project like that is the My Little Yellow Bicycle line of Baby Safari items. I particularly like the Baby Boy flanimals. For only a dollar, they're a steal! There's also the Baby Boy Chipboard stickers which are under $3. I'll follow the basic format of most baby books, but have pages where the shower guests can "sign in" with their name and a brief message to baby and the parents to be.

I love that my friend is a creative person and is one to appreciate things like this. I know that she'll be thrilled with the gesture and the fun gift. I'll be posting pics from the shower early next week as a bonus post, to make up for the one I missed. Till then, happy scrapping and have a great weekend :D

Fanciful Fridays - The flowers of summer!

Fun Fridays - Summer holidays here I come!

Has summer hit you yet? For us in Montreal, summer played a cruel joke on us and went from cold to warm very quickly and then we proceeded to have spring. Wet and cool have been the order of the day for a few weeks now, but I'm noticing a warming trend in the next week. I sure am hoping it sticks around as I'd really like to spend more time outside enjoying the sun and warmth.

I know for some of my friends they have already started planning their trips to their cottages up north. I'm really hoping that I'll have a chance to go camping this summer, even if for only one weekend. It's been years since I've been, granted, I'd have to hit the local Canadian Tire to pick up camping supplies as I'm down to nothing since my dad gave away the tent I always used. When I moved from T.O. I got rid of the rest of my supplies, Sheesh, that's 10 years, I guess it really has been awhile.

I do have weekend getaways planned though, at least one in July. And for that I'll need proper vacationing scrap supplies. Hopefully you've checked out the Making Memories Great Escape line. Fanciful Fridays - Soon to be summer!

Well it's the end of another month, usually they go by quite quickly but for some reason May seems to have gone by very slowly for me. We had such nice weather earlier on and then it turned chilly and damp. I thought this was supposed to be April weather? it's just not right for May. I can't wait for those temperatures to creep up again and bring back the warmth.

On the flip side, Nini has kept things hotter than ever and has brought in some great products over the course of the month. She's really outdone herself. If you haven't checked out the new items page, you really should.

Craft project : Memorial Day star wreath

Supplies needed :

Red, white and blue cardstock

A paper plate

Scissors

Adhesive

Optional - glitter, brads, buttons

1. Cut a large hole in the plate, depending on the size of the plate make the width of the base of the wreath anywhere from 1" - 2".
2. Cut out many stars from the cardstock, you can shake things up a little and make them various sizes if you want.
3. Adhere the stars to the paper plate.
4. Finish by adding any embellishments you desire, whether it's glitter, brads or buttons.

There are many sites with various kid friendly Memorial Day crafts, this was just one I saw and thought it looked fun. I hadn't had a chance to make any of them due to time constraints at home, but if you decide to make any, please post pictures on the community site, we'd love to see your creations!

Fanciful Fridays - Happy Victoria Day!

Once again I'm a few days early for the holiday wishes :) I had hoped to make something themed for the holiday, but somehow a layout about camping and drinking just didn't seem right. Also, the only pics that I have of those activities happening are from 15 years ago! (the last time I went camping)

So for those not in the know, here's an excerpt from wikipedia :

Victoria Day, colloquially known as May Two-four, May Long, or May Run, is a Canadian statutory holiday celebrated on the last Monday before or on 24 May, in honour of both Queen Victoria's birthday and the current reigning Canadian sovereign's official birthday. It has been marked since before Canada was formed, originally falling on the sovereign's actual birthday, and continues to be celebrated across the country on a fixed date and in various fashions, also being considered an informal mark of the beginning of the summer season.

So, instead of something holiday themed, I decided to go with "cute" instead. My sister will be visiting at the end of the month and she will be laden down with many paper crafts made by me. Thankfully, she's always happy to receive presents! I can't wait to fill all the little bags and boxes with fun goodies, just for her!

I made my own template for this one, so I can only show you what it looked like before assembly. I took one sheet of foiled cardstock from the DCWV Citrus cardstock pack for my base. I then used a piece of Cherry Arte Her Beauty printed paper for my background on the purse. The cardstock is a nice heavy weight and the patterns of the Cherry Arte papers are so much fun!

I had a blast stamping with my new Stampavie Hoo Hoo There stamp which I affixed to the layered background. A Cherry Arte rub on, Valentine's sticker that I had lying around and a piece of fiber from Basic Grey finished it off nicely. Now to figure out what to stuff it with, I'm sure I'll be able to find a few cute hair scrunchies and clips for her or maybe I'll venture out and find something completely new to give her.

I'll have to let you ladies know what she thinks of all the little gifts that she'll be getting. Maybe I'll even take pictures and scrap them.

Fanciful Fridays - Happy Mother's Day!

Hope you ladies didn't forget that this Sunday is Mother's Day!

To celebrate the occasion, I've created a super simple project that will be perfect for those adorable little goodies you've got put aside for *your* mom. From what I can tell a lot of you are mom's yourself, and in that case you can always direct your partner to this post so *they* can make this simple box.

It really is super simple. You can see the template on the left hand side. You cut around the outside and fold on the inside dark lines. Glue the flap at the bottom to the opposite side to create the pillow box. You'll see below in my finished projects how they are supposed to look.

By using cardstock as your base, you'll have a nice sturdy box. I used Pink Paislee's Sweet Cakes Honey Bunch for my stamped box and Pink Paislee's Sweet Cakes Sweet Nothings for my second box.

Then using ribbons, patterned paper and tags you can keep on creating and liven up the outside! I've chosen to stamp and emboss one of my boxes and use Pink Paislee's Sweet Cakes ribbon with a Pink Paislee's postcard tag for the other. All in all, a total of about 20 - 30 minutes of work for both. Now they're ready to fill and give.

All of the Pink Paislee products used are in the clearance section which gives you a chance to save a few dollars now to put towards the gift that will go inside afterwards!

Fanciful Fridays - Happy May Day!

My goodness, where did the day go?

Hurray, hurray, the first of May... Wishing everyone a very happy May Day! Happy Beltane! For those that don't know the history, here's a snippet from wikipedia :

For the Celts, Beltane marked the beginning of the pastoral summer season when the herds of livestock were driven out to the summer pastures and mountain grazing lands.

Many communities still celebrate Beltane with May Poles, Morris dancing, bonfires and flower crowns. It's a wonderful way to welcome the warmer months :)

I had plans to show you how to make a table top May Pole centerpiece and a flower crown, but didn't have the time to make them today. It's just been that kind of day, a shame really. It would have been fun to celebrate and dance around my very own May Pole with my friends toddler :)

My post will have to do without the photos, although over the weekend I may end up making both of these items (even if a little late for any celebrations) and posting the pics.

For both projects you will need quite a bit of ribbon, I'm sure looking here will help you in your quest.

May pole centerpiece :

• Take a dowel, that can be found at any local hardware store and place it in a pot of earth (which later can be used for planting)
• Affix a number of ribbons at the top, either by gluing or stapling
• Intertwine the ribbons around the dowel, working your way down to the bottom.

To the right is an example of what it should look like as it's being intertwined.

Decorate the pot how ever you would like. The brighter the better as it is a celebration of the upcoming summer! If you don't have a dowel, you can use a paper towel tube and decorate it before attaching the ribbons.

Flower Crowns :

picture below is to give you an idea of what it looks like

Take florists wire and wrap it around your head a few times to get the size you want.

Take these lengths or wire and wrap them with ribbons and fibres.

Add to the circlets a few flowers and jewels.

Wear with a smile and dance around your May Pole!

I've made flower crowns before using the fun garland you can get during holidays at the dollar store and adding to it. Ribbons are what make these projects pop! Without them they are nothing *lol* Play around with what can be added to make them more unique, I'm sure the possibilites are endless!

Fresh Fridays - April's last hurrah!

It's almost the end of April and most people I know are gearing up for summer. The weather is nicer and nicer every day, the sun is shining, the breezes are warm and we get to wear fewer layers each time we head out the door! I've already been out back in my private courtyard cleaning up the mess that fall and winter left behind. I can't wait to get my BBQ fired up!

But, before you get sidetracked by BBQ's and sunshine outings, don't forget to scrap your Easter and springtime pages! The last few days where it might be rainy or cooler are great days to spend some time scrapping, just don't forget to open the window a crack and pull back the curtains!

Fresh Fridays - Challenge your brain...

Springtime is here and isn't it lovely. Usually this is when we start doing spring cleaning, to clear away the clutter and dust of winter. We open up the windows to let in the fresh air and sweep away the cold, dark blues of winter.

Well, if we're all so willing to do that for our homes, why not ourselves?

We get so used to a certain way of doing things. Habits and routines that sew themselves into the fabric of our lives. It's springtime folks, let's put on our thinking caps and challenge ourselves.

Over at the community site, we've got a fun thread in the forum for challenges. Yes, you read right a "thread", dedicated to sketch challenges and thinking outside the box. One of the fun challenges that have been posted is about Breaking the rules of scrapbooking.

Rule #3 is Scrapbook pages should always start with photos.
The challenge : Create a page about a story and photograph objects to accompany it.

How much fun could you have putting together a LO without the intial photo. My first thought was, this could be tricky. What will I do? Then it occurred to me. I have a number of favorite movies and one quote has been going through my head recently a fair amount, so why not create a page about the movie? It seems to be the trend lately, Kim posted only yesterday about her movie creations and here I am posting about mine. *lol* What a way to learn about your design team.

I wanted to keep it simple, I started by printing up the title and quote on vellum, not quite realising how tricky this can be and some of it smudged a little. Then I found a few great photos online from the movie, found a neat labyrinth to use in the background and got to work. I'm sure I could have filled the page with each characters name and quotes that I like from each of them but it would have defeated the purpose.

The main quote is the one I think of first when I think of Labyrinth, it brings me back to when I was a young teen and looked up to the character of Sarah. She was my teen heroine, braving caves, goblins and other scary creatures, not to mention the Goblin King, to save her step-brother. Her fight for family and how important it was to her and of course the new friends she made along the way made the story endearing to me and I'm sure many others. To this day it is one of a number of films that are quoted most often by my friends and I.

So I'm hoping you'll be wanting to do a little self spring cleaning and head over to the challenge thread to post about your adventures in breaking a few rules!

Fresh Fridays - Hippity Hoppity

Easter's on it's way!

This week I've got a cute little project to make for your little ones (and not so little ones!). A super simple, Easter treat bag. And believe me, it's simple!

Cut a sheet of plain or printed cardstock like American Crafts Cardstock Pack - Spring to 6" X 12". Score and crease at 2 1/4", 6 1/4" and 8 1/4". Fold so that the short piece is at the front. Because it's cutting the page in half, I ended up making two at the same time! (see, simple)

To make the topper and have an extra piece for the 2nd treat bag, cut a sheet of printed paper to 6" x 5". Score and crease at 2 1/2" and 6". Attach the paper using a tape/glue runner. I've used various Easter themed adhesive borders that I had lying around to decorate the front as well as ribbon. Of course you can use anything your little heart desires to create the feel you want! I'm sure that for the Cricut users out there, you'll have the perfect cartridge to use. For the closure I used a 3/4" hook and loop circle.

Once your goodie bag is made, you'll need to fill it. Take a 6" cellophane bag and fill it with mini eggs, chocolates and marshmallow chicks, fold over the top edge and staple. Then use a tape/glue runner to attach to the inside of the goodie bag.

Now it's all ready to give. Of course after making and filling them, you may decide you want all the sweet treats for yourself!

Bring May flowers.

It's officially been spring for two weeks now, but today really feels like a spring day. Mild and rainy, washing away the snow and winter grime and making things ready for spring. It's grey out and I do realise it will be that way for a few days at least, but I also know that the grunge is going away.

When the sun shines, it's brighter and warmer. The month of March was the start of spring cleaning for me. I tidied up each room and started to do a spring purge. This month I'll look at the fun, fresh products we have in store for the perfect spring layout!
